Cabinet Painting in New York, NY

Painting the cabinets is the least disruptive way to change a Manhattan kitchen. It keeps the layout you have and usually avoids the board approval that a full renovation in a co-op or condo can need. City kitchens are small and get heavy use, so the finish depends on degreasing, sanding, a bonding primer and a hard cabinet enamel.

A galley kitchen in a Manhattan apartment has little room to hide a poor finish. The doors sit at eye level, a hand's width from the stove, and they are opened dozens of times a day. That is why cabinet painting here is a finishing job, not a wall painting job. We look at what the boxes and doors are made of first. Solid wood and wood veneer take paint well. Thermofoil and laminate need a bonding primer and an honest talk about how long the result will hold.

Doors and drawer fronts come off and are numbered so each returns to its own hinge. Every surface is degreased, because cooking residue is the main reason cabinet paint lets go. We sand, fill dents and old hardware holes if you are changing pulls, prime, sand again and apply a hard enamel made for cabinets. Where the building and the space allow, doors are finished off site or in a sealed-off room. The frames are painted in place by brush and fine roller.

Plan on the kitchen being partly out of use for several days, with shelves emptied only where we need access to the frames. Fresh enamel feels dry within hours but takes weeks to reach full hardness, so we ask you to be gentle with it at first. Because the layout, plumbing and wiring stay untouched, this work is normally treated as decorating in a co-op or condo. We still send the certificate of insurance your building asks for before we start.

Cabinet painting in New York: common questions

Where do you spray cabinet doors if I live in an apartment?

House painters NYC

It depends on the building. Some jobs allow a sealed and ventilated room in the apartment. In others we take the doors away, finish them elsewhere and bring them back. Frames are always finished on site by hand, with the kitchen masked off.

Can rental-grade laminate cabinets be painted?

Often, yes, with a bonding primer and the right enamel. Peeling or swollen laminate is another story, since paint cannot fix a failing surface under it. We check edges near the sink and dishwasher before we recommend painting.

Will I be able to cook during the job?

For part of it. The stove and sink usually stay connected, yet wet frames and masking make cooking awkward for a few days. Most customers plan simple meals. We tell you in advance which days the kitchen is hardest to use.
